bio

I studied djembe music with Fotigui TOURE and took lessons, participated to workshops or just played along with the followings musicians: Fode YOULA, N'Toman KEITA, Noumoudy KEITA, Mamady KEITA, Diarra KONATE, Lamine BAYO, Moussa FAYE, Lamine DIBO CAMARA and M'Bemba CAMARA.

I founded PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE with Mare SANOGO and Ali WAGUE in 1984. We started in a close to traditional mandingo style, then I made it evolve in a more experimental direction. Roger RASPAIL, Miguel GOMEZ, Florent HALADJIAN, Emmanuel BAUDRY and Epizo BANGOURA joined us. We recorded an LP - Percussion Ensemble - with some additional guests: Christian NICOLAS, Daniel GOYONE, Olivier FRANÇOIS, Fanta KOUYATE and Mangala CAMARA. The album was recorded and mixed by Christophe DUPOUY at I.R.C.A.M - thanks to Olivier KOECHLIN - and Studio DAVOUT. Radio France Internationale gave the LP the "DEMBA CAMARA" Prize. In 2007 Philippe NASSE republished the CD along with a DVD of one of PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE concerts he filmed in 1987.

I played and/or recorded with M'Bemba CAMARA, Fode YOULA, Ryo NODA, Ray LEMA, Dee Dee BRIDGEWATER, Arshie SHEEP, Joachim KHÜN, Kazumi WATANABE, Jean Louis AUBERT, Stefan RIGERT, André CECARRELLI and DURAN DURAN.

Teaching
Teaching rhythms and how djembe music works in a way that will ease your learning experience is my job. Further than reproducing somebody else's music we will do our best together to make you play your own, with style.
